Reburn is a NOx control process which reduces NOx by "staging" the fuel injection into the furnace to produce a slightly fuel rich environment above the existing burner zone. NOx is reduced to atmospheric nitrogen (N2) by reactions with the hydrocarbon fragments produced by the substoichiometric combustion of the reburn fuel. Overfire combustion air is added through specially designed overfire air ports to complete the combustion process.

This process can be applied to virtually any boiler design and size. The NOx reduction potential depends upon the conditions in the main combustion zone and in the reburn zone. Temperatures, residence times, and furnace flow patterns are important in determining the effectiveness of the process.
