EPA Updates National Top 25 List Of Green Power Purchasers

Air Force Remains No. 1; Wells Fargo Becomes Largest Corporate Purchaser

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. EPA has updated its Top 25 list highlighting the largest national green power purchasers in the Green Power Partnership. Over the last quarter, the Top 25 list has seen a large amount of movement including six new Partners with an additional five jockeying for position on the list through increased green power purchases.

While the U.S. Air Force remained the No.1 purchaser of green power in the nation, the big news this quarter – Wells Fargo has moved into the top corporate purchaser spot, ranking No. 2 on the Top 25 list overall. Wells Fargo is purchasing 550,000,000 kWh of green power, the largest corporate purchase to date in the Green Power Partnership, and the largest purchase by a financial services company.

Other movement on the Top 25 list includes six new entrants, five of which are new to the Partnership: Dupont Company (No. 7), Vail Resorts (No. 9), California State University System (No. 19), the City of Austin, Texas (No. 21), and NatureWorks LLC (No. 23). Additionally, as a result of an increased purchase, SprintNextel made the Top 25 list for the first time at No. 14, establishing itself as the leading green power purchaser among telecommunications companies. In all, there are 14 U.S. corporations on the Top 25 list, which reflects Partner purchase information as of September 22, 2006.

The actions of the Top 25 Partners help drive the development of new renewable energy sources. Combined, the Top 25 purchases amount to nearly 4.7 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of green power annually. These purchases represent enough renewable energy to power nearly 378,000 homes each year. The Top 25 Partners are also responsible for approximately 67 percent of the green power purchases made by all Partners and provide an excellent example to their peers, customers, employees and communities on how to take action in reducing the emissions associated with your electricity use.

EPA's Green Power Partnership is a voluntary program helping to increase the use of green power among leading U.S. organizations. The program encourages organizations to purchase green power as a way to reduce the risk of climate change and the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use. Currently, the Green Power Partnership has more than 600 Partners voluntarily purchasing over 7.0 billion kWh of green power. Partners include a wide variety of leading organizations, such as Fortune 500 companies, local, state, and federal governments, trade associations, as well as colleges and universities.

EPA updates the Top 25 list quarterly. The next update, scheduled for January 2007, will reflect information received from Partners by January 8, 2007 for purchases completed by December 31, 2006.
