Emerson To Install PlantWeb® Digital Architecture With Ovation® Control System At New 300-MW, Combined Cycle Power Plant

Emerson Process Management announced recently that it will install its PlantWeb® digital plant architecture with the Ovation® expert control system at Basin Electric Power Cooperative's Deer Creek Station. This new 300-MW, combined cycle plant, to be located near the town of White in southeastern South Dakota, is being built to help Basin Electric meet its members' growing demand for power. The plant will serve as an intermediate supply unit that will run approximately 12-16 hours a day, cycling to meet demand. The new plant is expected to be operational in June 2012.

In addition to monitoring and controlling the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and balance of plant processes, the Ovation control system will also interface to the plant's GE gas turbine and Alstom steam turbine. The Ovation system, designed to meet the specific challenges of the power generation industry, will manage approximately 2,500 process variable points at Deer Creek.

Also part of the PlantWeb digital automation solution for Deer Creek is Emerson's AMS™ Suite predictive maintenance software. For new plant construction, AMS Suite: Intelligent Device Manager streamlines device configuration and commissioning, which contributes to more efficient plant startup. AMS Device Manager also provides real-time access to instrument and valve process information, diagnostic status information, and automatic documentation of all field device maintenance information – all contributing to ongoing efficiency of plant operations and maintenance activities.

The comprehensive automation project will be engineered and installed by the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. Equipment delivery is slated for summer 2011.

"Basin Electric's confidence in Emerson's people, technology and customer support is extremely gratifying," said Bob Yeager, president of Emerson's Power & Water Solutions division. "Winning an additional contract from Basin Electric energizes us to continue to do our best work, deliver great value and exceed customer expectations."
