Caterpillar Inc. announced recently the introduction of its first mid-range generator set meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. Designed for standby, prime and load management applications, it offers the latest in engine design technology. Powered by the Cat C15 engine, the ratings for this 60 Hz package are 500 ekW (Standby) and 455 ekW (Prime). Building on the attributes of the C15 diesel generator set with ACERT Technology, this package offers highly competitive service intervals, fuel consumption rates and power density. This is the first available in the Tier 4 Interim certified series of diesel generator sets – additional product announcements will follow in the coming months.

Utilizing an electronically controlled air management system, the advanced emissions control on the engine acts to lower combustion temperature, achieving decreased NOx output. Thus the EPA regulated levels are met without the need for aftertreatment. By relying on engine technology alone, customers benefit from the most cost-effective solution, which minimizes impact on installation size, operating practices and maintenance complexity.

The C15 Tier 4 Interim certified generator set package will be the first to offer Caterpillar's latest generator set controller – the EMCP 4. An evolution of previous EMCP 3 models, the state-of-the-art EMCP 4 delivers a more intuitive, user-friendly interface/navigation and a scalable platform with added flexibility to precisely match customer power requirements. It offers greater configuration options to meet unique installation requirements (i.e., improved communication with SCADA systems – Modbus, RS-485 and Ethernet).

Additional engine features include an ADEM A4 controller and MEUI fuel system. Its durable design provides added reliability, consistent performance and excellent fuel economy.

The generator set offers an Air-To-Air After Cooler (ATAAC) cooling system, multiple control panel and power connection locations, and enhanced package-mounted circuit breaker options. The self-excited, random-wound generator provides a UL 1446 recognized Class H insulation system. It features IP23 protection, a VR6 voltage regulator with load adjustment and 2/3 pitch stator winding.

Optional weather protective and sound-attenuated enclosures are available on the new Tier 4 Interim package. To support the new line of generator sets, Cat dealers and technicians will be factory trained in emissions technology. From configuration and installation to maintenance and service, Cat dealers lead the industry in expertise and support.

For more than 80 years, Caterpillar Inc. has been making progress possible and driving positive and sustainable change on every continent.
