The Cycle+, a new automatic transfer switch that combines reliable power sensing with high speed automatic transfer switching
The Cycle+, a new automatic transfer switch that combines reliable power sensing with high speed automatic transfer switching, is now available from Powell-Esco of Greenville, Texas. The Cycle+ is designed to provide a high performance alternative to slow (and often ineffectual) electromechanical switches and prohibitively expensive sub-cycle, solid state switches. It provides affordable, positive power protection for facilities with certain types of lights, computers, programmable controllers, adjustable speed drives, and other continuous process equipment that is extremely sensitive to power interruptions.

Utilizing the latest in power quality sensing and high speed transfer switch technology, the Cycle+ can provide automatic transfer switching from a preferred, or lost source, to an alternate source in less that 1½ cycles (18-22 milliseconds). Studies by utilities and continuous process manufacturing companies have shown that 18-22 millisecond transfer times will provide uninterruptable power protection in the most sensitive applications.

The Cycle+ uses a newly developed power sensor to attain high speed transfers. The unit precisely senses the power quality of two incoming power sources and detects voltage irregularities. When an irregularity or outage is detected, the Cycle+ transfers the load in less than 1½ cycles. The power-sensing controller is user settable and field-configurable. The parameters include over/under-voltage, over-current, phase-angle inhibit, auto transfer mode, transfer/re-transfer time, RTU address for serial communication, and more.
