ABB Unveils Breakthrough Technologies At AWEA Windpower 2011

SSVT's, "green" transformers, generators and low voltage drives part of a wide range of superior wind power technology offerings

ABB, the wind industry's leading power technology solutions provider, recently announced several major technological developments from the floor at the annual AWEA Windpower 2011 conference and exhibition.

ABB provides wind power technology solutions for everything from electrical design to substation construction up to project management, installation and commissioning. These technologies unveiled during AWEA Windpower 2011, at the ABB booth (#1067), include:

  • Station Service Voltage Transformers (SSVT) for reliable cost-effective station power. The ABB Kuhlman SSVT combines the characteristics of a voltage transformer with power rating capability of a distribution transformer. This provides a fully insulated reliable product up to 230kV with power performance up to 333kVA per phase. SSVT can be used either as single phase for supplying single phase loads, or in a three phase bank for three phase loads. The station service design allows a reliable direct connection to the high voltage transmission line in a convenient, economical installation using a pedestal mounted transformer. The power transformation is taken directly from the high voltage primary down to the low voltage output.
  • ABB's quick ship unit, known as the KXM Series-Parallel, for fast wind power projects. ABB Kuhlman high voltage instrument transformers business announces the introduction of an all-purpose multi-ratio combination metering unit that satisfies most every metering installation a user might have with a single part number per voltage class. The flexibility of the multi-ratio CT allows ABB to build ahead and have stock or extremely short lead time for quick supply units at 69kV, 115kV, 138kV, or 230kV ratings.
  • New wind power generators with lower costs and customized interface. ABB is demonstrating its wind power generators, combining a standard base construction with customized interface connections, lowering costs for turbine manufacturers and shortening delivery times. ABB has created these generators in response to turbine manufacturers who are requesting standard generators that are built especially for wind turbines.   • BIOTEMP transformers. These "green" transformers contain a complete and sustainable transformer fluid solution for distribution and power transformers combining environmental friendliness (biodegradability), safety (superior fire resistance), reliability (longer lifetime), and efficiency (higher overload capacity) for many wind applications.
  • Green-R-Pad distribution transformers. These "green" distribution transformers combine the benefits of amorphous metal cores for up to 70 percent lower no-load losses, with the benefits of BIOTEMP environmentally friendly transformer fluid, to provide the ultimate transformer solution for wind and other renewable energy applications.
  • EcoDry transformers. These dry-type transformer offerings provide ultra-high efficiencies with up to 70 percent lower no-load losses than standard dry-type transformers. With no fluids to leak and no fire hazards, the EcoDry transformer provides a safe, reliable and energy efficient solution for any wind application.
  • ABB low voltage drives. ABB will be offering a full line of wind turbine converter solutions covering the complete wind market, including small, community and utility-scale wind farms. These drives' features include HW and SW functions for fault ride-through and grid code compliance. ABB also is providing new grid integration, with PC simulation models for utility compliance studies. ABB offers test facilities to validate compliance.
  • R-MAG 38kV outdoor breaker. Bringing the state-of-the-art breaker technology to the wind industry, ABB's R-MAG breaker utilizes magnetic actuator technology, with its advanced yet simple low maintenance design. Longer times between maintenance cycles and a higher rating for number of operations results in reduced maintenance and operating costs.
  • ABB Substations. ABB now offers turnkey collector systems and substations and custom turnkey grid interconnections, mitigating the wind developer's risk and taking responsibility for complete system integration. ABB even has pre-designed collector systems for the most common voltage levels, saving the customer time and money.
