In our Tight Buffered OPGW design, optical fibers are assembled in units of 6 or 8 fibers which are placed in the helical groves of an aluminum spacer. A hermetically sealed aluminum tube fits closely around this spacer to protect the fibers from environmental conditions and from external forces.
Aluminum-clad steel and/or aluminum alloy wires are stranded around the tube. These provide the necessary strength for installation, and for wind and ice loading when in service. They also provide sufficient conductivity to control the temperature increase in the cable during fault conditions
