Echelon's Latest Version Of NES Software To Propel E.ON Sweden's Grid Modernization Program

400,000 Unit Echelon Smart Metering System to be Integrated into New Service Designed to Harness Big Data and Enhance Smart Grid Solutions for E.ON's Customers

San Jose, CA /PRNewswire/ -- Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON), the world's leading control networking platform provider, today announced that Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), the world-leading provider of communications technology and services, will provide E.ON Elnat Sverige AB (E.ON) with the latest version of Networked Energy Services (NES) Software and Element Manager in support of Ericsson's Smart Grid as a Service. Ericsson's service will cover the over 400,000 existing Echelon smart meters, providing new features including the ability to remotely upgrade the meters with new meter functionality and to monitor network conditions to prevent and predict outages. These network upgrades improve overall reliability and safety of the E.ON grid.

"Echelon is proud to work with Ericsson in support of a leading utility like E.ON in making the smart grid a reality," said Michael Anderson, senior vice president & general manager, Grid Modernization, at Echelon. "We believe our proven NES software, based upon Echelon's control networking technology, will provide the foundation for a modern grid by supporting a range of applications that will help improve Sweden's energy infrastructure, paving the way for a safer, more reliable and efficient grid."

E.ON, part of one of the largest private energy companies in the world, choose Ericsson to provide the hosted solution, which will gather data from Echelon's smart meters and provide collected data to E.ON's internal IT environment. Data will be exported daily rather than monthly, increasing data delivery by 3000%. Ericsson will also provide E.ON with related field services including consulting and systems integration.

The solution is an important step towards real-time big data measurements, supplying E.ON's customers with accurate and up to date information on energy consumption. The evolution of smart grids is a priority in a number of countries, including EU and the US, and will eventually create a smart energy network that manages a huge amount of data in 24-hour intervals.

"In the long term, we believe empowered consumers will be more efficient in their energy usage and this will result in a more sustainable society," said Per-Olof Lindholm, Management Director, at E.ON Elnat Sverige.
