Fugro Undertakes Aerial Survey Of AEP'S Extra's High Voltage Electricity Transmission Assets In Oklahoma, USA

Fugro is helping American Electric Power (AEP), one of the United States’ major utilities companies, to maintain a high standard of compliance and safety and modernise its record keeping system. With its innovative Roames asset inspection and modelling solution, Fugro is deploying aerial LiDAR technology to survey almost 1,000 miles of extra high voltage (EHV) network and its surroundings, enabling AEP to complete digital modelling of its entire transmission system.

Processing the enormous datasets is a key component of the project. Fugro will utilise cloud-based analytics to extract valuable information on asset condition, vegetation infringements, operating distances and compliance with limit values.

“More and more utilities are adopting our Roames virtual world asset management technology as a means to positively influence safety, security of supply, operating efficiency and control of transfer capacity of the transmission network,” commented Anthony Palizzi, Fugro’s Regional Service Line Manager. “We are excited to work with AEP in the same way that we also support major utilities companies in Australia and Europe monitoring over two million spans of network on a yearly cycle through the Roames platform.”

The project commenced in October 2018, and Fugro will survey transmission lines throughout the state of Oklahoma, delivering processed data by the end of the year.
