Smart Grid Creates Real Savings And Environmental Benefits
New SGCC report quantifies economic, environmental benefits of smart grid
A fully deployed smart grid has the potential of saving between $39.69-101.57, and between 55-592 lbs. of carbon dioxide emissions, per consumer per year in the U.S., says a new report issued recently by Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC).
The report, Smart Grid Economic and Environmental Benefits, aims to help smart grid stakeholders better understand the benefits associated with smart grid investments - economic, environmental, reliability and customer choice.
"The study presents quantifiable direct and indirect economic and environmental benefits of grid modernization based upon real-life case studies," explains SGCC Executive Director Patty Durand. "This research also indicates there is a strong business case for advancing our electric grid."
Durand also notes the report aims to help stakeholders determine what U.S. consumers can realistically expect to receive for their money, relative to smart grid investment, based on demonstrated experience.
Other key portions of the report explain:
- Exactly how smart grid capabilities create value relative to a traditional grid;
- The size of the various benefits (economic, reliability, environmental, and customer choice) as supported by available research, expressed "per customer per year" whenever possible;
- The key drivers of these benefits; and
- The costs typically incurred to create those benefits, expressed "per-customer" whenever possible.
