New Eclipse-T TVSS Family Offers Added Power Protection for Sensitive Equipment

COSTA MESA, Calif.– January 31, 2005 – MGE UPS SYSTEMS INC. the technology leader in providing unsurpassed power protection solutions to computer data centers, telecommunications and industrial operations, has introduced the comprehensive Eclipse-T family of commercial transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) equipment as a complement to its popular line of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). "With the ever-increasing use of highly sensitive electronic devices and tightly integrated installations, we have observed an expanded need for this type of equipment used in conjunction with our UPS systems to fully protect critical applications from the widest range of electrica! l disturbances," explained Mike Chmura, MGE's vice president of sales and marketing.

The new Eclipse-T series includes six products with single- and three-phase models offering peak capacities ranging from 100kA to 500kA in modular and non-modular panels. With high capacity service entrance, branch panel and integrated branch panel configurations, MGE can address the widest range of requirements for commercial, industrial and government installations with these compact, yet durable systems. Primary applications include automation and control systems, internal protection of commercial facilities that are prone to internal surges and transients caused by heavy inductive load switching, cellular towers or broadcast sites that are subject to lightning strikes and office equipment that can suffer performance degradation resulting from surge currents and transient voltages generated by nearby equipment.

All models feature an audible alarm, LED indicator! s, and dry contacts to notify users of system status, as well as indiv idually fused metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) for optimized protection. Most models also include a convenient surge counter (excluding the E-T100W) and a LightningTemp® fuse (except "BP" models) for added reliability and to prevent thermal runaway if MOVs are damaged. SineWave Tracker™ circuitry on models below 250kA suppresses transients closer to the sine wave for improved equipment protection. Specified models are available in NEMA3R enclosures suitable for outdoor or ruggedized installations.

The complete Eclipse-T product line is available now through MGE manufacturer's representatives and resellers with list prices starting at $904 to $5,622. All models include a 10-year limited warranty and meet or exceed international standards for safety and performance.

The IEEE Emerald Book (IEEE Std 1100-1999) states that transient voltage surges can be harmful to "UPS equipment and to the sensitive electronic load equipment (i.e! . via an unprotected static-switch bypass path around a UPS). Therefore, it is recommended practice that both the rectifier charger input circuit to the UPS and the associated UPS bypass circuits (including the manual maintenance bypass circuit) be equipped with effective Category ‘B' TVSS protection." In light of this, MGE has always recommended incorporating surge suppression in critical installations. By offering the new Eclipse-T products as part of a complete power protection solution, MGE simplifies the configuration and installation process for customers needing this level of protection.
