Visionary Electronics has just announced the release of RTU-PLC 1.0, a programmable logic control software package for use with the Visionary Model 1 and Model 2 remote terminal units. The primary application is to provide closed-loop functions to the existing data acquisition and control features of the RTUs.
The development software runs on any PC with the Windows 95 operating system. A drag-and-drop interface permits selection of functions such as status input triggers, event and time counters and relay control outputs. Boolean logic elements may be used to combine functions. The function set for each RTU is stored in a separate file.
A download routine transfers the function tables to either EEPROM at a local PROM burner or over the existing RTU communications interface to RAM on-board the intended RTU. Function tables in EEPROM must be swapped for the existing EEPROM at the RTU site.
Programmable logic control can be used wherever the RTU has sufficient local input data to provide a clear decision tree. By not involving the master station in routine feedback applications, response time can be improved for the desired event, as well as reducing communication load on the network of RTUs.
