MapFrame Corporation announced today that it has added a powerful new solution to its FieldSmart family of software applications. Designed specifically for mobile settings, it combines map viewing, inspection, and data collection capabilities in one easy-to-use package.

The application brings versatility to the data collection process by providing a variety of tools to capture and record information at the work-site. In addition, FieldSmart Collect accepts data from all major GIS and CAD systems, so field personnel can use their map data as part of the collection process.

The software runs on all computers supporting Windows 95 and 98, but is optimized for use on high-performance pen-based tablets. With a powerful pen computer, users can quickly add information to an existing database by tapping on a list item, or by tapping and placing symbols on a map or sketch, or printing in a field. The software also provides annotation capabilities so users can write a note on the basemap. The note is saved as a separate layer.

FieldSmart Collect is characterized by the use of "gestures". These simple marks made directly on the pen computer screen transform computing into a highly efficient mechanism for capturing data in or outside a vehicle. For example, to view data associated with an object on a map, all a user has to do is write a "V" on the object. The data pops up. To zoom in, you circle the area of interest. To zoom out, you write a "Z" on the computer screen.

The software can be easily customized to reflect corporate language and standards. FieldSmart Collect interfaces with work management, accounting, and GIS systems.
