DVI Selected By Glendale Water & Power For Grid Voltage Optimization Pilot
- Southern California-based municipal will deploy DVI's EDGE® solution to maximize energy savings
- Successful deployment will contribute to California's energy efficiency goals for publicly-owned utilities
- EDGE® technology expected to deliver 2%-4% energy savings while leveraging existing smart grid infrastructure
Richmond, VA /PRNewswire/ - California's Glendale Water & Power (GW&P), in collaboration with Dominion Voltage, Inc. (DVI), a grid-optimization subsidiary of Dominion Resources (NYSE:D), has signed a license agreement for the use of DVI's EDGE® advanced grid optimization solution.
"The City of Glendale is committed to delivering energy savings to customers by utilizing the existing AMI infrastructure it has already invested in," said Steve Zurn, Glendale Water & Power's General Manager. "DVI's patented approach to effectively plan, manage, and validate energy savings is the ideal solution for a new energy efficiency program at GW&P. Pending a successful pilot, we look forward to adopting this as part of our overall energy efficiency portfolio."
EDGE® seamlessly integrates into a utility's existing IT infrastructure and can obtain voltage readings from the existing AMI system. EDGE® optimizes the utilities' field devices by issuing commands over an existing wide area network to optimize the distribution system voltage.
EDGE® works because it delivers grid-side energy efficiencies to both the utility and its customers by optimizing the distribution system voltage. Best of all, it doesn't require any behavioral changes or purchases by utility customers. "We are delighted to be working with GW&P to provide to their community with a proven method that increases energy savings and optimizes the voltage delivered to each customer," said Todd Headlee, DVI's Executive Director. "The California public power market has led the nation in energy efficiency programs since the 1970's. Grid-side voltage optimization is the logical next step, because many of the traditional energy efficiency savings have already been realized."
Glendale Water & Power was the first utility to sign the Department of Energy (DOE) grant to receive $20 million for their Smart Grid project. This project is supported by the DOE through GW&P's smart grid grant.
