D-SMES, Distributed Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage, is designed to improve system reliability and expand transmission capability at low cost. Both real and reactive power is inserted at strategic points to protect against instabilities and low voltage conditions. The program integrates line monitoring, energy storage and 4-quadrant power electronics to quickly boost transmission line events and keep the system up.

A superconducting magnet stores real energy. Inverters provide continuously adjustable Watt/VAR injection. When the monitor detects an event, the system immediately supplies the necessary energy to quickly restore system voltage with no need for load shedding or other costly disruptions. This system can be deployed in combination with bulk transmission capacitors to optimally enhance power transfer while maintaining system stability. System studies define optimum number and placement of units. Ride-through times far longer than typical events allow it to bridge multiple, rapid-fire events. Even when completely discharged, the system recharges quickly. A monitoring and alarm system reports status to the user and to ASC field service offices.
