Telvent Selected To Provide Integrated Weather And Smart Grid Solutions To Accurately Predict Electrical Load
Telvent GIT, S.A., a leading real-time IT solutions and information provider for a sustainable world, announced today that Progress Energy has chosen its innovative Smart Grid Solutions technologies in combination with Telvent's industry-leading weather forecasts in order to dynamically and more accurately predict load for its distribution system and optimize its energy efficiency programs.
Progress Energy, which serves approximately 3.1 million customers in the Carolinas and Florida, is implementing Telvent's Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Distribution Management System (SCADA/DMS) as part of its EnergyWise smart grid initiative. The system helps operators accurately predict electrical load and make real-time dynamic adjustments, resulting in the optimization of the existing grid.
Because weather accounts for up to 90 percent of load forecasting demand variation, the SCADA/DMS system requires comprehensive historical and precision-forecasted weather data in order to achieve maximum efficiency on the grid. Independently rated as the most accurate in the industry for the fifth consecutive year, Telvent's weather forecasting technology will be fully integrated into Progress Energy's SCADA/DMS system.
According to Telvent's Chairman and CEO, Ignacio Gonzalez, "We are pleased that our integrated weather and Smart Grid solutions can provide hardware and software essential to customers like Progress Energy to help them achieve their goal of efficient and balanced operations."
Progress Energy has used Telvent's SCADA system for the last 13 years, partnering with Telvent again in 2009 to upgrade the SCADA and then implement DMS. Combining the SCADA/DMS system with Telvent's historical, real-time, and forecast weather intelligence will help Progress Energy to more accurately predict loads, leading to a more reliable and efficient Smart Grid.
